pupils step up to aid charities
By CCHF in charity partner school pupils
Hundreds of pupils at Magdalen College School (MCS) have been busy raising money for charity, with the Cancer Care and Haematology Fund (CCHF) benefitting by an amazing £6,132 as a result!
The MCS student body elected CCHF as their charity partner for the 2023-24 academic year, aiming to raise both funds and awareness of our vital work. Since then, pupil-led initiatives supporting CCHF have included:
- Collections at the School musical and carol services
- Christmas Fair donations
- A Christmas Jumper (non-uniform) Day
- Collections at School music concerts
- Charity cake sales
- A collection at the Waynflete Studies Lecture Evening
- Collections at House social events
The activities involved a wide range of pupils, from Year 7 all the way through to Year 13.
Dr Ann Watson, Chair of CCHF, commented: “This was a wonderful and unexpected contribution to our funds from Magdalen College School and we are incredibly grateful to the pupils, teachers and parents for their support over the past year. It is so encouraging to see how these young people have embraced the important work of charities and how hard they have worked to support us.”
Dr Scott Crawford, Deputy Head (Education Development) at MCS, added: “At Magdalen College School, we believe in the importance of social responsibility and the role our pupils can play in making a positive impact. This remarkable fundraising effort for the Cancer Care and Haematology Fund not only demonstrates their commitment to helping others but also further instils in them an awareness of the importance of contributing to the local community. We are proud of our pupils’ dedication and the creativity they've shown in supporting such an important cause.”
Magdalen College School's history dates from 1480 when William Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester and Lord Chancellor of England, endowed two grammar schools, which were intended to supply a succession of educated students who would then continue their studies at nearby Magdalen College, Oxford. Today, MCS is one of the UK's leading independent schools, with more than 900 pupils and a long and proud tradition of partnership and community engagement.
CCHF is a charity set up to help those diagnosed with cancer and haematology based illnesses and who are being treated by Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. Through public fundraising a specialist unit – the CCHU - was built and opened in January 2001 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury. The charity continues to provide financial support for projects that benefit patients cared for at the CCHU, the Sunrise Unit in Wycombe Hospital and in community settings across Buckinghamshire and neighbouring counties.
