HATS OFF TO NIC!

Keen crafter Nicolette Smith has decided to put her crochet skills to a very good use this autumn by making a range of really pretty hats for use by those undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Nic is taking part in the global 2023 Crochet Cancer Challenge hosted by Christine Naugle, owner and designer at Sweet Potato 3. Christine's challenge – which has been going since 2012 - runs each year throughout October (which is Breast Cancer Awareness month) and supporters pledge to crochet one hat per free download of around 31 patterns offered by a group of crochet designers hosted on Christine’s website via a “blog hop”.

Applying her skills for the crochet Cancer Challenge means a lot to Nic. Several close members of her's, and her husband's, families have suffered from cancer and have been, or are still being, treated. Understandably, she's keen to support as much as she can.

Crocheted hats 2023

Born in the Netherlands, Nic has lived in Aylesbury since 2002 and intends to donate her 31 hats to the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital for use by patients undergoing treatment and who would like one.

You can see more of Nic's super crochet creations and follow her progress @flyniccrafts on Facebook or @flyniccrafts on Instagram.

The Cancer Care and Haematology Fund is a charity set up to help those diagnosed with cancer and haematology based diseases and who are being treated by Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. Through public fundraising a specialist unit – the CCHU - was built and opened in January 2001 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The charity continues to provide financial support for projects which benefit patients cared for at the CCHU, the Sunrise Unit in Wycombe Hospital and in community settings across Buckinghamshire and neighbouring counties.
