Exciting new building “lands” on schedule

A new modular building was successfully craned into position alongside the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit (CCHU) at Stoke Mandeville Hospital on schedule last Saturday morning (27 April).

The building was delivered on a specialised low-loader lorry, and made the 30-mile journey from Abingdon in Oxfordshire to the hospital by road. It was delivered to Stoke Mandeville by the manufacturers, Agile Property and Homes Limited, and was lifted from the lorry by heavyweight crane and placed onto a pre-prepared base next to CCHU.

The free-standing “pod” is designed to a high environmental standard and the Cancer Care and Haematology Fund (CCHF) – the charity that supports Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust's cancer treatment service – is meeting the building's cost of more than £100,000.

The pod's calm and comfortable space will be used by patients, families and staff for informal and relaxed meetings away from the bustle of the CCHU treatment area, and it will be an important addition to the existing facilities for those patients receiving cancer care.
