Charity commits more cash to patient comfort

The Cancer Care and Haematology Fund (CCHF) have committed further significant spending to improve the experience of cancer sufferers undergoing treatment in Buckinghamshire.

Firstly, an additional chair has been purchased for the cancer psychology service to use in their therapy room at the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit (CCHU), Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

The need for an additional chair was flagged following patient feedback, highlighting the importance of being able to include patients and their partners in psychology appointments. The team aims to create a space where they can welcome patients and their partners for support as they seek help during their cancer journey.

Secondly, the charity is supporting a two-year project at CCHU using a new product that it is hoped will for some patients address finger and toe nail damage caused by chemicals used in chemotherapy treatments. It is also intended that the treatment will improve patients’ self-esteem and mental wellbeing as nail toxicities are a common and often overlooked side effect of systemic anti-cancer therapies.

Nicola Gilham, CCHF's Chair, said: “We continue to work with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to identify ways that will benefit cancer and haematology patients during their treatment. This latest funding commitment of nearly £20,000 is a great example of how we can help with things that can often fall outside the Trust's financial budget.”

CCHF is a charity set up to help those with cancer and haematology based illnesses. The charity provides financial support for projects that benefit patients cared for at the CCHU and in the Sunrise Unit at Wycombe Hospital. Cash is raised by donations from a generous public and the charity is managed by a team of trustees who give their time for free so that as much money as possible benefits the support and comfort of patients.
