Betty shines at soapbox derby
By CCHF in fundraiser donation support
A big thank you to our supporters Lesley and David Ridgway who raised £65 at Aylesbury Town Council's Soapbox Derby by asking visitors for small donations in exchange for a photo with Betty, their beautiful 1950 Ford Pilot V8.
Lesley was successfully treated for oesophageal cancer at the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit (CCHU), Stoke Mandeville Hospital, in 2023 and the couple wanted to help raise some money and awareness for CCHF.
Betty holds a special place in Lesley's heart. As a little girl her father had a similar Ford Pilot and she remembers using the back seat arm rest as a horse holding on to the ropes on the back of the front seat. Husband David bought Betty recently as a surprise birthday gift for Lesley.
Betty was joined at the hugely popular Soapbox Derby by some members of Haddenham Classics who were promoting Men with Machines CLC, which is a not-for-profit company that tackles the issues around men's mental health, particularly older men, simply by creating opportunities to socialise with all ages and genders in their community.
CCHF was set up in 1990 to raise funds to help patients diagnosed with cancer or blood disorders by funding the construction of a specialist unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Today the charity continues to provide financial support for patients and clinical staff at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust treatment facilities at both Stoke Mandeville and the Sunrise Unit at Wycombe Hospital.
