Charity supports cancer treatment learning

CCHF charity is funding three Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT) nurses to attend an important conference in London next month (November).

The UK SACT Board Annual Conference is a nationally recognised event that focuses on the safe delivery of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT), and the nurses will receive updates on best practice, patient safety, emerging treatments and service developments.

SACT is at the heart of the treatment and care provided by BHT at their Cancer Care and Haematology Unit at Stoke Mandeville and at the Sunrise Unit at Wycombe Hospital.

CCHF Chair Nicola Gilham said: “The charity has a track record of supporting additional learning and training for nurses and clinicians and we are delighted to be able to help on this occasion. Our aim is always to ensure that patients receive the most up to date specialist treatment at the cancer and haematology units and that their overall experience is the most effective possible.”

Rebecca Howard, the Practice Development Nurse for Cancer Services at BHT explained: “As cancer treatments continue to evolve rapidly, it is essential that our nursing workforce remains up to date with the latest evidence and developments. The learning gained would be shared with the wider cancer nursing team through education sessions and practice updates, allowing the benefit to extend beyond the three attendees and ultimately improve patient care.”

NHS training budgets are stretched and many nurses are unable to benefit from some conferences and courses, and this is where CCHF can step in to meet local need. “This support would provide an invaluable opportunity for our staff to access specialist education that would otherwise be difficult to fund,” Rebecca added.

Thanks to the fund-raising efforts of our friends and volunteers, CCHF can provide additional comforts and support for patients receiving treatment, including:

  • key treatment facilities
  • specialist clinical equipment
  • free wigs for patients
  • a cancer information and wellbeing service
  • environmental enhancements for treatment units
