The CCHF has-not 1-but 2-supporters in this year’s London marathon in April!  Both are running because of close personal or family experience of the Unit. Andy is running in memory of his lovely, brave and inspirational sister. He is a regular ‘Park runner’ but this is his first full marathon and he is training hard, alongside his beloved dog, to up his distance. Jo is an experienced marathon runner and won her place through previous  times but this time she is competing whilst still on medical treatment. Please support this brave pair. We hope to hear more of their training and see some photos.

A fear of all chemotherapy patients is that it won’t be possible to ‘find’ a vein to administer chemotherapy, or that it will be difficult and painful. Chemotherapy nurses are very experienced and rarely defeated but extra help has arrived at the CCHU and Sunrise Unit in the form of an accuvein – a clever piece of kit which ‘lights up’ the hidden veins and makes cannulation much easier. The idea for buying these came from a patient who had experienced the problem first hand and who provided a large part of the cost, topped up by the CCHF. They are already in use in both units and have the customers seal of approval.  Here the accuvein is being demonstrated by Trudi Wallis, one of our highly trained chemo nurses.

Many will have seen pictures on the walls of the CCHU painted by  members of this group, run in the CCHU under the helpful eye of Niki Powell. Many find that art can be a useful way to cope with feelings and emotions through creativity and self expression. Or it can just be a lovely way to get out and meet others and do something relaxing and different. No prior experience needed.  If interested you can find out more from the Cancer Information Centre. Or come along, meet members of the group and see the results of their efforts on 3rd October.

The MCF COMMUNITY AWARDS results have been announced with CCHFund having been entered into the Buckinghamshire Charities category. The voting closed on the 31st July with over 177,000 votes being cast across all categories! The Cancer Care & Haematology Fund received the most votes out of the six charities nominated for Buckinghamshire area and has won £25,000 of funding!!! A stunning achievement that we are all very proud of!

The MCF COMMUNITY AWARDS were to celebrate 300 years of Freemasonry, and the Masonic Charitable Foundation held a public vote to decide how to spend £3 million of charity funding.

The votes were counted and the results announced on the 5th of September via Social Media and Emails! Dr. Ann Sibly – the architect of gathering votes – didn’t hear about the news until she was bombarded with emails from various parties this morning!!

Over 6,500 people were reached via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter posts (which you doubtless would have seen!), which worked alongside direct action from Ann Sibly, the hospital staff and local people connected by the CCHFund. Dr Ann did a number of interviews on hospital radio and 200 A4 posters, 4,000 leaflets and 4,000 business cards were produced by the tireless Richard Atfield

However, the biggest thanks goes out to all those who voted and have managed to get CCHFund the top prize of £25,000 worth of funding. THANK YOU! The money will go into various projects which have lined-up in order to improve the quality of care for those patients with Blood disorders or Cancer at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. We will continue to support patients with Blood disorders or Cancer at Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust by funding a variety of innovative projects, over and above the expected NHS provision!

Ian is well on with his challenge of completing 20 olympic triathlons in 20 days to celebrate 20 years since finishing chemotherapy as a very young man.

In his interview with Mix96 Ian surprisingly  said the challenge is tougher mentally than it is physically! He added:

“I’m drawing on my experience of chemotherapy. It’s very similar in the way that you sort of just have to get on with it and do it. That’s what I’m drawing on.”

Sponsorship has been pouring in from his family and friends, especially those in the sports world who know how hard a challenge this is. If you would like to join them this can be done at  https://make-a-donation/fundraisers/Ian-hanson

All his friends at the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit send Ian our thanks and best wishes for the next 6 days.

Ex patient Ian Hanson is to do 20 marathons in 20 days ending with the St Neots race on 3/9/17. This impressive challenge involves a total of 30k swimming, 800k cycling and 200k running!  He is doing this to mark the 20 years since he came through intensive treatment for cancer as an adolescent and fully recovered his health. Sponsorship is welcome to encourage him to keep going and reward his heroic effort and can be made at

We hope to have an itinerary and  photos of our hero to follow him over the next 3 weeks
