The Unit - GP Perspective
"In 1989, the Cancer Care and Chemotherapy Unit was set up by Sister June Wilson, OBE, within Stoke Mandeville Hospital to provide treatment locally, on a day care basis, so that patients did not have to stay in hospital therefore leading normal lives in their own homes. I was recruited at that time to provide medical input from a GP perspective and things have gone on from there! What works well is that treating patients having chemotherapy as people living at home rather than patients reduces the impact of this potentially frightening form of treatment. Those of you who remember our humble beginnings will remember that we were based in a converted operating theatre.
This Unit was so successful that £900,000 was raised from the community to build and equip a unique new facility for the people of the Aylesbury area. The Cancer Care and Haematology Unit (CCHU) was officially opened on 4th April 2001 by the Princess Royal. In combining Cancer Care and Haematology, we have a Unit that is at the forefront of day care treatment in the U.K.
We are proud of the fact that we recently underwent external accreditation and received great praise for the innovative and high quality care in the Unit. This is a tribute to the many skilled and dedicated staff who work here."
