The Unit - About the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit
This unique stand alone facility was designed and purpose built to provide a wide range of outpatient and day case treatments for patients with cancer or a haematological disorder. Oncology and Haematology outpatient clinics are held there, chemotherapy and supportive treatments such as blood transfusions are given within the treatment area and complementary therapies are administered by our skilled team of volunteers.
Providing holistic care has always been an essential part of the ethos of the CCHU and patients and their families also receive emotional support, information and advice within a building which has been designed, as far as it is possible, to be calm, comfortable and relaxing.
Those visiting the CCHU will have noticed the painting of a wedding hung in the corridor leading from the waiting room to the treatment area. This picture was commissioned especially for the unit by Mrs Shirley Newell in thanks for treatment given to her husband John.
The picture is by Victoria K Russell (1962-), a distinguished painter who has two paintings in the National Portrait gallery. One, of the actress Fiona Shaw, was commissioned as a result of her winning the BP Portrait Award in 2000 and was the subject of a BBC documentary. More recent commissions have included a portrait of Margrethe ll Queen of Denmark.
More examples of her work and further details about Victoria can be found on her website http://www.victoriarussell.co.uk/portraits.html
